Mike Zarlingo, Durango Excavation Contractor and Founder of Animas Excavating
Mike Zarlingo is the founder and owner of Animas Excavating, a licensed and insured excavating company in Durango, Colorado.
He started the company in 2018 and has stayed hands-on ever since. When you call us, you're calling Mike.
From A Corporate Desk to the Seat of an Excavator
Mike spent 20 years at Oracle Corporation before he started Animas Excavating in 2018. He left the corporate desk behind, bought a dump trailer and a mini excavator, and drove around Durango taking every job he could find.
He cut his teeth doing sewer line repair and built the business from the ground up.
That sewer work is still near and dear to him, even now that the company handles full site development across the region.

Roots in the Four Corners
Mike's family has roots in the Four Corners area going back to 1939, a real connection to this region that an out-of-area competitor can't match.
Durango isn't flat, easy dirt. The work means rocky San Juan terrain and the hard rock that's common here and has to be hammered out, and Mike knows how to read this ground. That's what makes Animas a dependable Durango site preparation contractor and Four Corners excavation company, not just an excavation company in Southwest Colorado figuring it out on your property.

A Teacher, Not A Salesman
Mike's communication style is that of a teacher. He explains plainly why a cost is what it is, walks you through permitting and the local process, and connects new landowners with the builders, plumbers, and electricians they'll need next. For someone buying raw land from out of town, he's usually the first call and the guide through the whole thing.
As he puts it, "I'm 100% a teacher and I enjoy that. I like to help people."
He values honesty most, and he wants you to walk away thinking that guy is really honest, professional, and timely.
The Oracle Advantage Where Most Contractors Walk Away
Those 20 years at Oracle left Mike comfortable with the paperwork side of the business in a way most contractors aren't. Government and commercial projects come with certified payroll, Davis-Bacon wage requirements, and a mountain of forms, the kind of red tape that makes other companies walk away.
Mike is comfortable with that paperwork, which is a big reason Animas can take on government and CDOT work that other companies pass on.
Technology That Keeps the Work Precise
Mike brought 3D smart grade GPS satellite technology into the operation, and most excavation contractors in this area still haven't. Instead of setting wooden grade stakes and string line by hand, GPS-guided machine control guides the cut and fill in real time. That makes the work more precise, faster, and more cost-effective.
On larger commercial jobs it can cut roughly $90,000 in surveying costs, because we're effectively doing the surveying ourselves with the same equipment a survey crew uses. The payoff from 3D smart grade excavation in Durango shows up where it counts, in the timeline and the final invoice.
The Crew Mike Built
Mike’s crew reflects his values. His foreman, Ben Keil, started with zero experience, worked his way up from laborer to operator, and now runs crews, a direct result of Mike’s teaching approach. When Animas is on your property, you know who’s there and that they answer to Mike.
Easy To Reach, Quick to Respond
Mike built the company's process around being responsive. We get back to you fast, get out to your site soon after, and turn around a written bid without making you wait.
Free estimates are standard, and Mike takes that first call himself.

I recently hired Animas Excavating LLC in Durango, CO to do all of the site excavating, septic system, and utility ditches for a house we are building in Bayfield, CO. They did a very professional job with all aspects of the work, were timely and responsive to minor changes, and were a pleasure to work with. I would hire them again if the need arises.Posted on Matt SandorTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Our HOA hired Animas to clean our culverts. We are absolutely thrilled with the results! Mike and his team were prompt, diligent and conscientious. And most importantly, they delivered exactly what they promised ... and more! I would not hesitate to hire Animas again for work in our HOA or in my home.Posted on John WilsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had a great experience with Animas Excavation this summer (2025). Mike and his crew helped me with all aspects of site development on my new residential project. From grubbing, pads, footing excavation, driveway construction and septic work, they excelled. They were also flexible as things changed and their prices were fair. Mike also is well connected in the Durango area and was able to refer me to other trades / vendors when requested. I strongly recommend Animas Excavation for any site related work.Posted on Don FogelTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Animas constructed three rock walls for me. They sourced the rock and were able to find square cut or blasted granite that stacked to almost eight feet. They started when they said they would and worked steadily until finishing. They accommodated a few scope and material changes and charged fairly for those changes. They followed the engineer’s plans for the wall and did not cut corners. The walls look, to me at least, very good; I attribute that to the rock Animas found and the quality of their work. I highly recommend Animas.Posted on Jenny OBlockTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Michael Zarlingo, Animas Excavating, showed up immediately to assess and fix a leak associated with our irrigation system (ball valve failed). Michael worked tirelessly for almost two days, one of which was a holiday, to make the necessary repairs. Michael was responsive, easy to communicate with, and his fee was reasonable. We are very grateful for Michael and the work he did for us.Posted on Jessica RoesnerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Nd just no ncisPosted on ThomasTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. You guys did an amazing job, got it knocked out quick for the size and scope (roughly 5,000 sq. ft. building with water lines, septic and foundation with all those piers) and easy to work with. Everything looked great, we couldn't have hired a better crew of guys. I would recommend you to anyone who was looking for excavation work to be done. I wish you luck with all your projects down the road, thank you again.Posted on James WTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Mike and his team kicked butt on a sewer line replacement that had a collapsed saddle at the main sewer in the street. Mike was also patient and responsive to ongoing additional documentation I needed to get reimbursed by my service line insurer AWR.Posted on Alex PusztaiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Mike and the whole crew at Animas Excavating have been more than accommodating and very professional at every step of our project. When plans changed they were flexible, when feedback and professional input was needed they were more than helpful in sharing their expertise, and they have been very communicative throughout our 6+ month long project. I would highly recommend them for any of your excavation needs and will be using them for all projects in the future.
